The connection point between the tow vehicle could be a small turntable called a hitch or a large tow ball system both of which are positioned over or in front the rear axle of the tow vehicle. This is where the main advantages for safe handling of fifth wheelers come from.
Some of the Avantages.
· Towing the 5th wheeler is safer due to the weight being
over the rear axleof the tow vehicle (not a metre behind the axle), giving better control (no swaying) When you drive with a
fifth wheeler it is easy to forget you have a van behind.
· The load inside
the van does not have to be adjusted to remove the danger of swaying as with a caravan. (But it is important that the weight
on hitch is within the permitted weight).
· Greater legal payloads can be towed, larger
than motor homes or caravans of the same cubic metre area, This allows for a lifestyle more like a small house or flat.
· With larger tanks than caravans for fresh water as well as grey and black waste water
· Totally self contained with most having flush toilets, a shower and larger kitchen dining and sleeping area.
· Larger vans have what they call slide-outs; some imported vans have up to 3 slide outs. (The side walls slide out up to a metre, thus
giving more living area).
· Price: Most fifth wheelers are cheaper per cubic metre
with amenities than motor homes.
· Cheaper than motor homes to run as you can leave
the fifth wheeler at a camp spot or park and travel around looking at the sights. (You do not have pack up and take your van
with you each time). More space for less money.
· Tow with a normal car licence
if the weight on the wheels is less than 4 tonne, and the tow vehicle is one that you can drive with a normal licence.
· Separate kitchen, living and bedrooms, some include offices and/or separate bunk areas.
· Full height head room all through the van.
