Everyone will at one stage free camp, mostly the driver will be tired and find it is not safe to continue driving. while others free
camp most of the time, mainly these people wish to stay away from the main routes, take the back roads and visit towns
where there is no caravan parks.
We find these back roads and small towns are the most popular with 5th wheelers and other
RV's as this is where you will find the true Aussie and great atmosphere. While seeing the true country you are spending
some money in the local towns which is great.
We do not recommend that you camp in or within 30 klms from a town with a
caravan park, as these poeple also have to make a living (even though some charge to much for the service they give).
There
is also the small towns who open their showgrounds or other part of their town for you to park some times for a small fee, and welcome
you with open arms. But be certain of this by calling into their visitor centre or in some cases the only shop in town and ASK if
they permit free camping.
We also recommend the book CAMPS, a link is at the bottom of this page.
The most important thing is if you feel unsafe free camping DON'T, as the worse thing you can do is not have a good nights sleep
and then expecting to driving safely the next day. If you want to free camp, (Travel in pairs) travel with another
5thwheeler or RV and set up camp close to each other of a night. We recommend that you do not set up camp expecting another RV the
set up within the same area that night.
When making camp and you want a fire, make certain there is no fire danger period at the time. If there is not
a fire dange period clean a area 2mts around the place the fire is to be. If there is a fire danger period use you internal gas stove
or gas barbeque in an area where there is no grass, leaves or other flammable material to catch on fire.
Now having made camp and other RV's are in the same area and decide to get the generator out to watch some tv
or for some other use. consider the poeple around you, ask them or take the generator 20 to 30 metres away from the other RV's.
We also recommend that your generator is one that has a noise level not more than 60db under load. Remember the persons
beside you are also your security.
If you have parked with other RV's around you go and introduce yourselves and suggest that it is time for happy hour
or time for a friendly chat and cup of coffee, you never know the person could end up traveling with you or tell you about the
great camp spots down the road.
We also recommend you have at least two types of communication in the 5th wheeler with you.
1/ A mobile phone (the new g
network is ideal as telstra have said that they will increase the range from 100 to 200 klms in the next couple of years.
2/ A
UHF radio on the truckies channel 40.
Have you ever thought of replacing the fly screen and installing a security screen, for
peace of mind $700 is well spent.
Below we make some suggestions including security issues while free camping.
